Nine months ago I wrote five Personal Goals for 2015 that I wanted to make myself accountable for what I wanted to acheive this year. I even wrote an update earlier in the year discussing the progress I made.
Well, here I am again getting close to the end of the year with another update of my goals.
1. Lose 60 pounds
I wish I could say I'm almost to my goal but the reality of the situation is that I am not. I would say I haven't made any gains here.
Here's my plan for the rest of the year. Thanks to Atlassian's gym reimbursement program I recently signed my family up for Golds Gym (which I feel like will be better for me as it was really hard making it to Crossfit as I can work out later at night). I'm currently reading the book Starting Strength as everyone recommends that for starting a training program and will be looking to get that integrated into a routine. Right now I'm going and trying to get my cardio back. They have a Concept 2 rower which has been kicking my butt and reminds me of when I was doing Crossfit.
I'm currently working on a meal plan which will include preprepping meals for the week to make it easier to stay on track. This is by far the hardest part for me. I know what I need to do but doing it is another story. It's like a smoker who wants to quit but can't. Soda for me is an addiction. I just need to stop.
I'm hopeful that I can still lose 20 pounds by the end of the year. It'll all depend on how well I can get the routine up and going. That's my immediate goal for now.
Verdict: Needs MAJOR attention
2. Create an Emergency fun of at least $10,000
I've done good with this goal throughout the year. To date I've put $6,490.68 away for emergencies. Unfortunately, emergencies is what it went for. With car repairs and a dog with a broken leg the money I put away has been used. So even though I am no where close to having $10,000 the money I put away made it so easy to have these emergencies pop up and not have to worry about how I was going to pay for it.
I occassionally go back to the initial goals post to review and when I went back to review this goal I realized that there was a very specific reason for this goal. The money is to safe guard against losing my job suddenly like what happened to me last year.
So I'll need to rethink how I am saving money going forward. Perhaps a separate emergency fund in addition to a $10,000 for job loss security fund. I believe I'll need to reestablish this goal for 2016.
My current goal for the rest of the year is to have $1650 set aside for emergencies.
Verdict: On the right track but may need to shift gears next year to reach the $10K goal.
3. Create better work/life balance
I'm still working on this one. I travel alot and work alot and don't spend nearly enough time with family. I personally feel like I am making progress here but then Hope always mentions how she wishes I could spend more time with her. So I feel like I'm failing at this.
Verdict: Needs more reflection and work.
4. Plan a family trip
Yay a goal that has been accomplished. In August we went to Hilton Head, SC and rented a gorgeous house near the beach with a pool and hot tub. I've heard from everyone in the family that this was by far the best family vacation ever.
We're looking to do it again next year and already found the house to rent and it's again in Hilton Head, SC (as long as they survive this flood).
Verdict: MISSION ACCOMPLISHED (No seriously not like a Bush mission accomplished)
5. Figure out what's causing my allergies
Another goal accomplished. I went to an allergies and after getting an allergy test and looked over the doctor nailed the diagnosis Nonallergic Rhinitis.
Nonallergic rhinitis involves chronic sneezing or having a congested, drippy nose with no apparent cause. The symptoms of nonallergic rhinitis are similar to those of hay fever (allergic rhinitis), but there's no identified allergic reaction involved. Nonallergic rhinitis can affect children and adults, but is more common after age 20.
Although nonallergic rhinitis is more annoying than harmful, it can make you miserable. Triggers of nonallergic rhinitis symptoms vary and can include certain odors or irritants in the air, changes in the weather, some medications, certain foods, and chronic health conditions.
So he prescribed me a nasal spray of QVAR which is a steriod and I spray that in my nose once a day and I haven't had a sneezing fit since. It's been so amazing. I wish I would have done this earlier in life.
Verdict: Mission Accomplished
So let's say I'm about 2.5 out of 5 goals accomplished. Right now I think the weight goal is priority and hoping I can lose 20 pounds by Christmas. Stay tuned for another update.
